  • January 19, 2001: Tarpon Springs, Florida - The Ombudsman Report of Findings and Recommendations Regarding the Stauffer Chemical Company Site, Tarpon Springs, Florida (PDF 1.5 MBytes) is available on the ATSDR Web site. The file may be viewed with the Adobe Acrobat Reader which can be downloaded for free from www.adobe.com.   • January 11, 2001: Fort Ord, California - The Monterey County Health Department and Fort Ord have asked ATSDR to review the possible health effects associated with burning brush and debris on ranges at Fort Ord.

  • December 21, 2000: Mirror Site - ATSDR, in collaboration with the Toxic Oil Syndrome Research Centre (CISAT) of the Institute of Health Carlos III, Madrid, Spain, has established an ATSDR mirror website in Spain.

  • November 27, 2000: New Addition - Information on ATSDR's new special initiative, Alaska Native Subsistance and Dietary Contaminants Program, is now available on this Web site.

  • November 24, 2000: Update - The Summer/Fall 2000 issue of ATSDR's newsletter Hazardous Substances & Public Health is now available on ATSDR's Web site.

  • November 2, 2000: Camp Lejeune, NC - Some drinking water wells in operation at Camp Lejeune prior to 1985 were found to be contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE), used as degreasers and dry cleaning solvents. ATSDR is now seeking women who were pregnant while living in base housing at Camp Lejeune from 1968 to 1985 to participate in a survey. [ Details ]

  • October 25, 2000: Collaboration - With the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, ATSDR has agreed to collaborate with the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB). As part of the collaboration, ATSDR will assist the CSB as it investigates chemical incidents.

  • October 13, 2000: New Addition - GATHERTM, ATSDR's interactive map server, provides interactive mapping of hazardous waste sites. Maps include many data layers such as population, demographics, hydrology, and more.

  • September 21, 2000: Anniston, Alabama - The Exposure Investigation Report on the Solutia Inc./Monsanto PCB Site in Anniston, Alabama is now available online.

  • September 11, 2000: Paper - Report of the Expert Panel Workshop on Psychological Responses to Hazardous Substances is now available.

  • August 15, 2000: Health Professionals: Assistance Needed - If you are a health professional and not an expert in environmental health, ATSDR needs your assistance in Pilot Testing ATSDR's Case Studies in Environmental Medicine (CSEM).

  • July 31, 2000: New Addition - ATSDR's Washington, D.C. Office has added a section to ATSDR's Web site which includes Legislation Relevant to ATSDR.

  • July 28, 2000: New Addition - The Environmental Health and Nursing Web pages contain information on nursing in the field of environmental health. Included are training opportunities and a list server for communicating with other nurses in the field.

  • July 25, 2000: The Spring 2000 issue of ATSDR's newsletter Hazardous Substances & Public Health is now available on ATSDR's Web site.

  • July 20, 2000: Posted for Public Comment - A draft of ATSDR's Environmental Public Health Research Agenda for 2002 - 2010 has been made available on ATSDR's Web site for public comment until September 1, 2000.

  • July 5, 2000: - Information on ATSDR's National Exposure Registry is now available on ATSDR's Web site and currently contains detailed information on the Trichloroethylene (TCE) Subregistry.

  • July 5, 2000: Libby, Montana (Update) - An Overview of the Libby Community Environmental Health Project is available. Also available are Resources for Information on Asbestos and Asbestos-Related Disease, questions and answers about Exposure to Asbestos, questions and answers about Exposure to Asbestos in Insulation, and questions and answers about Exposure to Asbestos in Sources Other than Insulation.

  • June 24, 2000: Dover Township, New Jersey - An investigation into an elevated incidence of childhood cancers by ATSDR and the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services has produced the report Analysis of the 1998 Water-Distribution System Serving the Dover Township Area, New Jersey: Field-Data Collection Activities and Water-Distribution System Modeling.

  • June 21, 2000: ATSDR's work on the health effects of substances in the environment is in the news.   • May 16, 2000: Brick Township, New Jersey - The Public Health Assessment on the Brick Township Investigation has been released for public comment.

  • May 16, 2000: LaSalle, Illinois - ATSDR and the Illinois Department of Public Health announce the availability of the preliminary mortality results of the first part of a two-part study of former workers of the LaSalle Electrical Utilities Company.

  • February 4, 2000: ATSDR and CDC announce a Public Health Training Network Satellite Broadcast - Geographic Information Systems in Public Health: Using Mapping and Spatial Analysis Technologies for Health Protection, to be broadcast 12:00 - 2:30 PM Eastern Time, May 11, 2000.

  • January 21, 2000: The Public Health Assessment for the South Weymouth Naval Air Station in Massachusetts is now available on the ATSDR Web site.

  • January 18, 2000: The Evaluation of Residual Respiratory and Other Health Effects from a Chlorine Release in Alberton, Montana is available on the ATSDR Web site as a Draft Final Report for Public Comment. The slides of the presentation on the study are also available.

  • January 17, 2000: The Summer 1999 issue of ATSDR's newsletter Hazardous Substances & Public Health is now available on ATSDR's Web site.

  • January 14, 2000: ATSDR announces the new Tribal Affairs area on the ATSDR Web site. These Web pages will address environmental health issues unique to native American tribes.

  • December 8, 1999: The Draft Preliminary Site Evaluation - Santa Susana Field Laboratory, Ventura County, California is now available on the ATSDR Web site.

  • December 7, 1999: ATSDR's Web site has been named one of the "Top 50" Web sites by Law Office Computing magazine. ATSDR was cited as an "excellent source for toxicity information" on "contaminants at issue in environmental litigation".

  • November 24, 1999: ATSDR announces a workshop on Studying Environmental Exposures Among Children with Cancer to be held January 25-27, 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia.

  • November 22, 1999: Just published -

  • November 14, 1999: The HAZMAT 2000 Spills Prevention Conference will be held April 4-6, 2000, in St. Louis, Missouri, at the Regal Riverfront Hotel. This conference will focus on policies that will foster hazardous material accident prevention, preparedness, and response activities.

  • November 12, 1999: ATSDR's Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) - Annual Report 1997 is now available. The HSEES annual reports describe the public health consequences associated with the accidental release of hazardous substances.

  • November 7, 1999: ATSDR's Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) is a new addition to ATSDR's Web site which provides answers to common questions about the agency and its work.

  • September 23, 1999: ATSDR's Toxicological Profile Information Sheet has been updated and is now available with current information on all of ATSDR's Toxicological Profile publications.

  • August 14, 1999: The ATSDR Communities Web pages are now available. These new pages were designed to answer common questions and help you find the information you are looking for.

  • August 13, 1999: The paper Public Health Implications of Exposure to PCBs is now available on the ATSDR Web site.

  • July 2, 1999: Dr. Barry L. Johnson, former Assistant Administrator of ATSDR, has written a book entitled "Impact of Hazardous Waste on Human Health". The book describes the association between hazardous waste and human health and the role of public health programs in addressing this association.

  • June 29, 1999: The ATSDR Web site is now hosting the Environmental Health in the U.S. Public Health Service web pages which are sponsored by the Sanitarian Professional Advisory Committee (SPAC).

  • May 24, 1999: ATSDR's Minimal Risk Levels (MRLs) of hazardous substances has been updated.

  • May 6, 1999: The recently released ToxFAQ Sheet for Dioxins has been added to ATSDR's Web site.

  • April 19, 1999: Media Advisory - ATSDR Updates Toxicological Profile for Mercury.

  • April 18, 1999: The Draft Agenda for Public Health Activities for FY 1999 and FY 2000 at U.S. Department of Energy Sites has been released for public review and comment.

  • April 15, 1999: ATSDR's Web site has won the CiteLine "Valuable Resource" Award. CiteLine (www.citeline.com) includes only sites that have been carefully screened for quality of content, overall usability and value to healthcare professionals. The CiteLine "Valuable Resource" award confirms a site as a credible source of healthcare information.

  • April 7, 1999: Industrial Chemicals and Terrorism is a paper that presents a 10-step procedure to analyze, mitigate, and prevent public health hazards resulting from terrorism involving industrial chemicals.

  • April 2, 1999: Chemical Hazards During the Recent War in Croatia summarizes the many uses of chemicals as weapons in the conflict between Croatia and Yugoslavia.

  • March 31, 1999: 5th Tar Creek Fish Tournament and Toxic Tour will be held April 15-17, 1999 in Miami, Oklahoma. This will be a national conference on abandoned mine reclamation looking at Tar Creek as a case study focused on cleanup and community health.

  • March 5, 1999: We will be upgrading the ATSDR Web server next Tuesday, March 9, 1999 between the hours of 3:00PM and 6:00PM Eastern Time. The Web server will be unavailable during this time as we install new hardware.

  • February 23, 1999: The federal government's Insure Kids Now campaign began today. See the Insure Kids Now Website for more details.

  • February 21, 1999: ATSDR's Toxicological Profile Information Sheet is now available with current information on all of ATSDR's Toxicological Profile publications.

  • December 21, 1998: The National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) has announced recompetition of its Superfund Basic Research Program. Applicants must submit letters of intent by January 29, 1999.

  • December 15, 1998: Dr. Barry L. Johnson, ATSDR Assistant Administrator, has received the Surgeon General's Medallion for outstanding sustained national leadership of the public health program under Superfund. Details of Dr. Johnson's accomplishments can be found in the Nomination for the Surgeon General's Medallion.

  • December 11, 1998: ATSDR announces its 1999 Partners in Public Health Meeting, to be held on March 8-10, 1999 at the Sheraton Colony Square in Atlanta, Georgia.

  • October 28, 1998: The Report on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), prepared by the Interagency Workgroup on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, is now available at http://web.health.gov/environment/. The public comment period is extended to December 15, 1998 (see Federal Register, October 28, 1998).

  • October 14, 1998: Recent congressional testimony by ATSDR's Assistant Administrator, Dr. Barry L. Johnson, on Medical Monitoring at Hanford Nuclear Facility and The Scientific Aspects of Mercury are now available on ATSDR's Web site.

  • September 30, 1998: Anyone may sign up to receive a copy of ATSDR's Public Health Assessment for the Hanford nuclear site when it is released for public comment by filling out the online form.

  • September 8, 1998: A Workshop on Scientific Issues Relevant to Assessment of Health Effects from Exposure to Methylmercury will be held November 18-20, 1998 at the Brownestone Hotel in Raleigh, North Carolina.

  • September 3, 1998: Press Release - ATSDR Creates New Ombudsman Position that will serve as an independent, neutral third party to assist any individual or organization in working with the agency when normal means have been unsuccessful.

  • September 3, 1998: ATSDR's Web site has been chosen as HMS Beagle's "Web Pick of the Day" for September 3, 1998. HMS Beagle is a webzine for biological and medical researchers, with a daily digest of the highest-quality Web resources and published material.

  • August 20, 1998: Dioxin and Dioxin-Like Compounds in Soil, Part 1: ATSDR Interim Policy Guideline has been adopted by ATSDR to assess the public health implications of dioxin and dioxin-like compounds in residential soils near or on hazardous waste sites.

  • August 16, 1998: ATSDR's Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) - Annual Report 1995 and Annual Report 1996 are now available. These annual reports describe the public health consequences associated with the release of hazardous substances.

  • May 20, 1998: ATSDR's Washington, D.C. Office now has its own home page with information on current legislation relevant to ATSDR.

  • May 19, 1998: The Proceedings of the PCB Expert Panel Workshop evaluates all pertinent information related to the public health implications of human exposure to PCBs.

  • March 29, 1998: The 1998 National Conference on Environmental Engineering is being sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and will be held June 7-10, 1998 in Chicago, Illinois.

  • March 20, 1998: The Toxicologic Hazard of Superfund Hazardous Waste Sites is a scientific analysis of the threat to public health posed by uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.

  • March 18, 1998: Announcing the conference Meeting the Urban Health Challenge: A Joint Public Health and Urban Planning Agenda - to be held in New York City, September 18-19, 1998.

  • March 1, 1998: Announcing the publication of Advances in Modern Environmental Toxicology, Vol. 25 Hazardous Waste: Toxicology and Health Effects.

  • February 22, 1998: ATSDR's Office of Urban Affairs (OUA) now has a home page on this Web site. OUA is focused on the topics of environmental justice, brownfields, and minority health.

  • January 24, 1998: The Society of Environmental Geochemistry and Health (SEGH) announces the Third International Conference on Arsenic Exposure and Health Effects to be held July 12-15, 1998 in San Diego, California.

  • January 19, 1998: ATSDR's ToxFAQs have been updated. There are 43 new fact sheets bringing the total to 103. Eight of the old fact sheets were also updated with current information (Benzene, Chloroform, Cyanide, Nickel, PCBs, Trichloroethylene, Tetrachloroethylene, and Vinyl Chloride). Keyword search capability has also been added to the ToxFAQs home page.

  • January 14, 1998: The Winter 1998 issue of ATSDR's Hazardous Substances & Public Health Newsletter is now available.

  • January 10, 1998: Internet HazDat has been updated. Internet HazDat is the Internet version of ATSDR's hazardous substance release/health effects database.

  • January 7, 1998: ATSDR announces the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Public Health, 3rd National Conference to be held August 18-20, 1998 in San Diego, California.

  • January 5, 1998: ATSDR's Minimal Risk Levels (MRLs) for Hazardous Substances has been updated with the latest information.

  • December 21, 1997: ATSDR now has a central point of contact for general information. The ATSDR Information Center can be reached by phone toll-free at 1-800-447-1544 or by e-mail at ATSDRIC@cdc.gov.

  • December 5, 1997: The Environmental Health Policy Committee of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services now has its own Web site containing information about the committee and its activities. The site also has links to other Web sites with information on environmental health and a way to search for environmental databases.

  • November 22, 1997: ATSDR's 1997 CERCLA Priority List of Hazardous Substances and 1997 Completed Exposure Pathway (CEP) Site Count Report are now available. ATSDR's Top 20 Hazardous Substances has been updated based on the new Priority List.

  • November 1, 1997: ATSDR is accepting nominations for the Otis Air National Guard Base Community Assistance Panel (CAP), until November 30, 1997. Nominations may be submitted on line from this document.

  • October 29, 1997: The Health Care Industry's Impact on the Environment: Strategies for Global Change is a live, interactive, teleconference that will be presented by the University of Vermont at 12:30 - 2 pm, EST on Monday, January 12, 1998. The conference is meant to alert participants to the toxicity of dioxin and mercury, the volume of pollution generated from the health care delivery system, and the urgency of preventing dioxin formation and dispersion. The program seeks to motivate health care professionals to (1) change the way they procure, use, and dispose of medical supplies; (2) educate their patients about the health effects of environmental pollution, and (3) advocate for minimization of medical waste incineration in their communities, states, and the nation.   • October 28, 1997: ATSDR Public Health Advisories are now being posted on the ATSDR Web site. Posted health advisory on Trinity American Corp. in Randolph County, North Carolina.

  • October 19, 1997: ATSDR's Public Health Assessments (the full documents) are being converted to HTML and added to ATSDR's Web site. There are currently 54 documents available listed by region and state.

  • October 16, 1997: ATSDR's Public Health Assessment Guidance Manual is now on line. The manual is a guidance document to aid in the development of public health assessments by health assessors both at ATSDR and in the states.

  • October 9, 1997: Help build the Nation's health agenda for the 21st century, Healthy People 2010, the third national health initiative, is now open for public comment.

  • October 1, 1997: ATSDR's FY 1999 Strategic Performance Plan is now on line. This document focuses on the requirements of the federal management reform initiative - the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA).

  • September 22, 1997: The New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Massachusetts Association of Occupational Health Nurses announce their 1997 Annual Conference to be held December 4-5, 1997 at the Back Bay Hilton in Boston, Massachusetts.

  • September 10, 1997: The ATSDR Methyl Parathion Expert Panel Report is now available. The expert panel workshop was convened to discuss issues related to illegal spraying of the pesticide methyl parathion (MP) in residences.

  • September 5, 1997: The Fall 1997 issue of ATSDR's Hazardous Substances & Public Health Newsletter is now available. This issue is dedicated to the topic of health promotion.

  • August 14, 1997: An Evaluation Primer on Health Risk Communication Programs and Outcomes has been developed by the Environmental Health Policy Committee of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to facilitate planning evaluations for health risk communication programs.

  • August 13, 1997: EPA Region III's 9th Annual Chemical Emergency Preparedness & Prevention Conference to be held at the Hilton Hotel & Towers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 2-5, 1997.

  • June 4, 1997: The National Response Team and the Chemical Emergency Preparedness and Prevention Office (CEPPO) are pleased to announce the 1998 International Hazardous Material Spills Conference to be held at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, Illinois on April 5-9, 1998.

  • April 30, 1997: Internet HazDat has been updated. Internet HazDat is the Internet version of ATSDR's hazardous substance release/health effects database.

  • April 24, 1997: The ATSDR Child Health Initiative now has its own Child Health Home Page here on ATSDR's Web site. These Web pages contain environmental health information that is specific to children's health and the pages are written especially for children, students, parents, and teachers.

  • March 6, 1997: The Tufts Environmental Programs Council announces a conference on Endocrine Disruptors in the Environment: Assessing the Risk to Human Health, to be held April 16, 1997 in Boston, Massachusetts at the Tufts University School of Medicine.

  • February 27, 1997: ATSDR announces it is co-sponsoring Health Conference '97 - Great Lakes/St. Lawrence to be held on May 12-15, 1997 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The conference will address the effects on human health of environmental contaminants in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River basins.   • November 22, 1996: The document Guidance for ATSDR Health Studies is now available on this WWW server. ATSDR uses this document as guidance in considering health studies for communities that might be exposed to hazardous substances.

  • November 14, 1996: The Fall 1996 issue of the Hazardous Substances & Public Health Newsletter is now available on this WWW server. This issue's special topic is Children's Health and the Environment.

  • September 4, 1996: Tuskegee University announces its Conference on the Human Genome Project, to be held in Tuskegee, Alabama, September 26-28, 1996.

  • May 9, 1996: ATSDR/EPA Top 20 Hazardous Substances has been updated with the 1995 list of priority hazardous substances.

  • April 12, 1996: Internet HazDat has been updated. Internet HazDat is the Internet version of ATSDR's hazardous substance release/health effects database. You can fill out forms to query the database and use hypertext data to "drill down" to more detailed information. The very popular Public Health Statements are also available with full text search and retrieval.

  • April 12, 1996: The Twelfth Conference on Radiation and Health will be held in Vail, Colorado, June 23-27, sponsored by the American Statistical Association. The theme for the 1996 conference is "Radiation Risk Assessment, Statistical Methodology, and Mechanisms."

  • March 29, 1996: A listing of ATSDR Job Opportunities is being updated weekly.

  • February 7, 1996: ToxFAQs, ATSDR's toxic substance fact sheets, now contain molecular models for many of the 60 substances listed. These models are available as a .gif image and an .xyz format 3D viewer file. The 3D viewer file can be viewed with molecular modelling software such as RasMol. You can also configure RasMol as a viewer to run within your web browser.

  • January 14, 1996: An Overview of The 1995 International Congress on Hazardous Waste, which was sponsored by ATSDR, has been published on the World-Wide Web by the Freshwater Foundation in their Health & Environment Digest.
